The Goshin Ju-Jitsu Association

The Goshin Ju-Jitsu Association  is based in Waterlooville, Hampshire, at the Waterlooville Community Centre and has been in operation since 1994. Senior instructor is Sensei Peter J. Light 5th Dan,

Ju-Jitsu was first introduced into the UK by William Barton-Wright in the late 1800's after studying it in Japan under Jigoro Kano, who was also the founder of Judo. On returning to the UK Barton-Wright founded his own self-defence system calling it Bartitsu.

Just as a point of interest Ju-Jitsu is the forerunner (mother if you wish) of Judo, Aikido and Karate and, according to various records, has been around for something like a thousand years in one form or another. It

was also used by the Samurai warriors. Today in certain quarters it's known as Unarmed Combat and various aspects of it are taught to the armed forces and police worldwide.

Although we teach all the conventional Ju-Jitsu techniques, we also teach techniques which are by far a lot easier for ladies to learn. Plus we, the Instructors, take about 90% of the punishment. Not the Ladies, thereby minimising their risk of injury. Student age is 18 years and above as we much prefer to teach people who really want to learn as opposed to ten minute wonders, which I fear most clubs have all experienced at some stage or other. Session Fees are kept as low as possible as are Grade and Membership Fees etc. We don't run classes for the sake of making money. We do it because we enjoy it. As long as we can cover our overheads we are quite happy with this. Also, as a matter of interest, there are no Japanese or other foreign terminologies to learn. It's all in plain English.  .
